Trading tools are useful when they answer a specific question: how much exposure a position creates, which release is scheduled, or what happened in your last practice trade. No calculator, signal or chart guarantees a profit.
Position-size worksheet
Start with account equity, a hypothetical loss budget, stop distance and pip value. Our position-sizing guide provides the formula and a complete EUR/USD example.
Lots = loss budget ÷ (stop distance in pips × pip value per lot). Use consistent currencies, check the contract specification and account for fees. A normal stop does not guarantee the planned loss.
Pip-value calculation
For a pair quoted to four decimal places, a conventional pip is 0.0001 of the quote currency. With EUR/USD, 1,000 euros of base-currency exposure × 0.0001 gives $0.10 per pip. For many yen pairs, a pip is 0.01; check the instrument’s specification rather than applying the same decimal rule to every product.
If your account uses another currency, convert the quote-currency pip value. Contract sizes and display conventions can vary, particularly outside standard currency pairs.
Economic calendars
A calendar helps you see scheduled releases and potential volatility. Check the publication’s timezone, the release date and whether the figures are actual, forecast or previous. A forecast is an estimate and previous figures may be revised.
- Federal Reserve policy calendar
- European Central Bank meeting calendar
- US Bureau of Labor Statistics release calendar
- UK Office for National Statistics release calendar
Check dates at the source before planning around an event. Knowing when news arrives does not tell you the direction of the market reaction.

A trading journal
Use a spreadsheet or notebook. Record the date and timezone, pair, direction, reason, entry, size, planned stop, exit, costs and result. Separate what you planned from what happened.
Review prompts: Did I follow the plan? Were costs higher than expected? Did I hold several positions with similar currency exposure? What would I change in the process?
Charts, volatility and correlation
Charts describe historical price behaviour. Volatility tools measure past movement and correlation tools describe a relationship over a chosen period. These relationships can change. A historical correlation is not a guaranteed hedge, and an indicator does not establish whether the next trade will profit.
Currency converters
A reference exchange rate helps with estimates, but your provider’s executable rate may include a spread or fee. Check the timestamp and whether the rate is indicative. For trading calculations, use the conversion method specified for your account.
Signals and third-party tools
Before using a signal service, check its full performance history, fees, drawdown, assumptions and commercial relationships. Screenshots of profitable trades do not show the full record. Avoid promises of reliable income or guaranteed returns.

Explore broker calculation tools
Check each calculator’s currency, contract size and assumptions. Cross-check the result against your own working and the instrument’s contract specification.
