Cryptocurrency Ownership, Wallets and CFD Risks

Cryptocurrency ownership and a crypto CFD are different products. Before comparing providers, identify what you would own, who controls access to it and which costs and protections apply.

Risk warning: cryptoassets can be highly volatile and you can lose the money you commit. Leveraged derivatives add further risk. This page provides general education, not a recommendation to buy an asset or open an account.

Owning an asset versus a CFD

Buying a cryptoasset through an exchange may give you an asset balance held by that provider. Whether you can withdraw it to an external address depends on the service, asset and account terms. A crypto CFD is a contract tracking a price: you do not own the underlying coins and cannot withdraw them from the CFD position.

For both products, consider the spread, trading fees and conversion costs. Derivatives can add financing and margin requirements. Ownership does not remove price risk, and an exchange balance creates custody and counterparty risks.

What a wallet does

A wallet manages the keys or account access needed to interact with a blockchain. The assets are recorded on the network rather than stored inside the physical device. With self-custody, protecting the signing keys and recovery information is your responsibility; with a custodial service, you depend on the provider’s controls and withdrawal process.

See the Ethereum wallet overview for an explanation of wallets and accounts, and Bitcoin’s user guidance for security and transaction considerations.

Hardware wallets are not immune to loss

Keeping keys away from an internet-connected device can reduce certain risks, but a hardware wallet does not guarantee security. Misplaced recovery information, phishing, unsafe approvals, tampered devices and signing the wrong transaction can still cause loss. Never share a recovery phrase with someone claiming to provide support.

Networks and transfers

Check the asset, network, recipient address and any required memo or tag before a transfer. A similar-looking token on another network may not be supported by the destination. Network fees and processing times vary, and confirmed transfers are generally not reversible through a conventional chargeback.

Not every blockchain uses mining

Networks use different mechanisms to agree on their records. Do not assume that every asset is mined, has a fixed supply or offers the same transparency and decentralisation. Understand the specific network and token rather than treating all cryptoassets as interchangeable.

Product availability depends on location

Rules for cryptoassets, derivatives and exchange-traded products differ. For example, the FCA’s statement on retail crypto ETNs distinguishes eligible exchange-traded notes from cryptoasset derivatives, for which its retail ban remains in place. Check current local rules and the provider’s permissions rather than assuming a product advertised online is available to you.

A provider checklist

  • Which legal entity supplies the product, and can it serve your location?
  • Are you buying an asset, a derivative or an exchange-traded security?
  • Who controls custody, and can the asset be withdrawn?
  • What are the trading, funding, conversion and withdrawal costs?
  • What happens if the platform stops operating or freezes withdrawals?
  • What protections and complaint routes actually apply?

Do not equate registration or a familiar brand with a guarantee of safety. For leveraged products, read position sizing and risk management and Risk of Loss. Our broker checklist explains how to evaluate entity-specific claims.

Check the product before choosing a provider

Confirm whether you are researching coin ownership or a derivative. Verify which instruments are available to your country and account entity; forex broker availability does not imply crypto availability.
