Forex and CFDs are complex products that can cause substantial losses. Leverage can make losses accumulate quickly. They are not suitable for everyone, and you can lose your trading capital.

Leverage and margin
Leverage creates exposure larger than the collateral required to open a position. Margin is not the same as the maximum possible loss. If your equity falls, the provider may close positions under its margin rules. Those rules do not guarantee an exit at a particular price.
Execution, gaps and costs
Prices can move abruptly, spreads can widen and orders may fill at a different price from the one displayed. Normal stop orders do not guarantee the chosen execution level. Commission, financing and currency-conversion charges can add to losses or reduce gains. Platform, connectivity and operational failures create further risk.
Account protections vary
Whether losses can exceed the funds in your account depends on the product, legal entity, jurisdiction and client classification. Some retail CFD regimes require negative balance protection; do not assume it applies to every account. Professional status and offshore arrangements can change protections.
For example, the FCA’s retail CFD restrictions include leverage limits and account protections for the firms and products covered. This is a UK example, not a statement about every jurisdiction. Read the current agreement for the exact entity accepting you.
Regulation does not prevent trading losses
A regulated provider can still offer products that lose money. Client-money arrangements and compensation schemes have specific conditions and generally do not cover ordinary market losses. Verify the entity and permissions using the relevant official register.
Demo accounts, signals and automation
Demo accounts use simulated funds and may differ from live conditions. Backtests depend on their assumptions and can overstate how a strategy performs. Copy trading, signals and automated systems can lose money and may create concentrated exposure.
Broker risk warnings
Where a provider publishes a percentage of retail accounts that lose money, check its current warning for the relevant entity. Percentages can change and should not be treated as a personal forecast. Different products, including underlying cryptoassets and crypto CFDs, have different ownership, regulatory and loss risks.
Before considering an account
- Understand the contract, all fees and how much exposure it creates.
- Use only funds whose loss you can withstand; avoid borrowing to trade.
- Check the legal entity, permissions, account protections and withdrawal terms.
- Understand the limits of stop orders and the provider’s close-out rules.
- Seek qualified advice appropriate to your circumstances if you need help assessing suitability.
